Business News journalists have won two awards this week in recognition of their coverage of architecture and sports in Western Australia.
Senior journalist Claire Tyrrell was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects WA President’s Prize 2024 for her work covering the state’s architecture and property industries.
Australian Institute of Architects WA President Sandy Anghie said the prize acknowledged an individual’s contribution to the advancement of architecture.
“For many people, architecture is a nebulous concept, often reduced to an image. This is where Claire Tyrrell, as an architecture and property journalist, has been playing a crucial role,” Ms Anghie said.
“Ms Tyrrell’s coverage of architects and their projects is extensive – educating and engaging the public on the many benefits of good design and inspiring engagement with the profession.”
Ms Tyrrell said she was deeply appreciative of the Australian Institute of Architects WA President’s Prize.
“During my time at Business News, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in a lot of the work of WA architects – both through the Australian Institute of Architects and also Perth Design Week,” Ms Tyrrell said.
“It’s a great privilege to be able to showcase good design and to learn about the intricacies of this profession in Perth.”
Journalist Justin Fris won the Perth Football League Media Award at the WA Football Media Guild awards night for his investigation into the business and financial aspects of the PFL.
Mr Fris additionally received a judge’s commendation in the Alan Newman best feature story category for one of his articles, which explored the financial models underpinning the WA Football League clubs.
Mr Fris said he was grateful for the support of his friends and colleagues.
“This achievement is dedicated to my managing editor Sean Cowan, who gave me a chance to join the BN family,” Mr Fris said.
“I also acknowledge the support of two of my close friends in media, Craig Jennings and Steve Butler.
“Both have always helped me challenge every doubt or negative thought – and like my BN colleagues, they’ve always encouraged me to tackle adversity proactively.”
Business News managing editor Sean Cowan said the latest awards recognised the quality of business coverage produced by the organisation.
"The awards add to Business News's editorial achievements in 2024, which included a record number of gongs at the international AABP awards that were announced in the US in June," Mr Cowan said.
"It's just more evidence that BN is leading the way in the coverage of business in Perth."
He said Ms Tyrrell continued to break the important stories on commercial property in WA.
"Her industry connections are second to none among journalists in this area, and it's hard work and dedication to the craft that have led to this recognition," Mr Cowan said.
"I might note that the award comes from industry and therefore carries extra weight.
"Justin's efforts in the past year to shine a light on the businesses that sit behind our most prominent sporting teams and competitions have been exceptional and this award for his coverage of the Perth Football League is great recognition for his work."
