Lanie Chopping became the acting director general at the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries on 31 May 2021, and was formally appointed a director general on 9 March 2022.
She has been the commissioner for Consumer Protection in Western Australia and acting executive director of Consumer Protection (Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety) since January 2020. Prior to that, Ms Chopping was head of the priorities implementation unit at the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
A social worker by profession, Ms Chopping first joined Consumer Protection in 2011 as manager of retail, building and services, and later became a director of that area. She had also held a senior position at the Economic Regulation Authority, was manager of the social policy unit at the West Australian Council of Social Services, and worked in community legal centres including in the Pilbara region.
