The Girls Academy was an initiative of Role Models and Leaders Australia, a not-for-profit charitable organisation founded in 2004 by Olympian and champion basketballer Ricky Grace. The Girls Academy develops and empowers Aboriginal girls through leadership training, mentoring, sport and extra-curricular programs.
In late 2020, the federal government announced the decision to cut funding to Role Models and Leaders Australia. A statement from Girls Academy on December 22 2020 said it would cease to operate its Girls School programs from December 31, 2020.
