LAI Group, formerly Leisure & Allied Industries, is the family business of Malcolm Steinberg, the founder of Timezone, and his son Adam.
Malcolm Steinberg founded the business as Indoor Amusement Games Company in 1958 with a handful of pinball machines and went into electronic games in 1978 with Timezone Family Entertainment Centre which expanded from Australia to New Zealand and then into untapped Asian markets, starting with Singapore, then Indonesia, the Philippines, India and Vietnam. In the 1990's the LAI Group began development of its own arcade games and software solutions for FECs which became the Helix Leisure Group, now a global player and still majority-owned and controlled by the LAI Group. In late 2017 the LAI Group, in partnership with Quadrant Private Equity, created The Entertainment and Education Group (TEEG) which acquired the Timezone business and Australian Bowling and Entertainment business from Ardent Leisure including the brands of Zone Bowling and Kingpin. Today, interests associated with the Steinberg family own about 50 per cent of TEEG which is based in Singapore and present in 7 countries with over 300 bowling and family entertainment centres.
