Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are well-known for their ability to streamline business operations and improve business productivity. However, as the demand for more efficient processes and accurate data grows, ERP systems are now incorporating new technologies to help businesses achieve greater success.
There are several emerging trends enhancing the future of ERP, with some of the most impactful developments including the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), increased adoption of cloud-based solutions, enhanced data security, and the integration of IoT devices.
As AI and other cutting-edge technologies continue to advance, ERP systems are gaining powerful new capabilities, and the future of business management is becoming more intelligent, adaptive, and efficient than ever before.
Upcoming trends for ERP systems
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in software
AI capabilities are progressively being integrated as fundamental components of ERP systems, rather than merely serving as supplementary features. As AI and Machine Learning continue to evolve business operations, their integration into ERP systems will significantly improve automation and enhance customer service functions.
This evolution can utilise technologies such as virtual assistants/chat bots to improve how users engage with and use their ERP system. A trend towards automation, especially for repetitive tasks such as data entry, invoice processing, customer creation and invoice scanning, will further drive efficiency within ERP systems.
These AI tools will empower businesses to predict market trends with more accurate forecasts, identify inefficiencies, and capitalise on new opportunities—often in real-time—leading to more agile, data-driven decisions.
2. Cloud-based ERP solutions
Historically, on-premises hosting and management of business applications has been the traditional model deployed. However, in recent years there has been a significant uptake towards implementing cloud-based ERP systems, due to the flexible and scalable models this provides, combined with enhancements in data security.
Adoption of cloud-based ERP solutions allows businesses to efficiently and swiftly scale their resources in alignment with their growth, ensuring that they only incur costs for what is genuinely required to run their business. Cloud-based ERP systems also help businesses to access their data in real-time, supporting more efficient process workflows and decision making.
3. Focus on cybersecurity, data privacy and regulatory compliance
As data privacy concerns continue to escalate and regulations such as GDPR and CCPA become more stringent, ERP vendors will continue to place a strong emphasis on compliance and data security in their solutions. One example of this, is providing businesses with advanced encryption and multi-factor authentication (MFA) to safeguard their sensitive information and help prevent data breaches.
ERP solution providers should also have provision for backups and disaster recovery which are vital to ensure a business can continue to run post incident, as well as investment in extra certifications such as ISO which is a holistic review of a business’s security including process, operations, policies and staff training and education.
4. Integration with IoT and industry 4.0 technologies
The Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 technologies are becoming more integrated with a range of smart devices and sensors, such as barcode scanners. ERP platforms will need integration with these IoT devices, enabling real-time data collection from factories, warehouses, supply chains, and other business operations.
5. Sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG)
As business focus more on sustainability and environmental impacts, it is likely that ERP systems will need to incorporate more ESG features and reporting. These may include sustainability reporting and dashboards to monitor energy usage, carbon emissions, water consumption and supply chain impact.
