Australia’s largest charity bike ride has raised a record $8.3 million for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
More than 1,500 riders participated in the MACA Cancer 200 Ride for Research on Saturday, starting their journey at Optus Stadium and riding 200-kilometres to Mandurah and back.
The event is considered the largest cycling fundraiser in Western Australia and the second-largest charity event in the state, behind Telethon.
The $8.3 million in proceeds will go towards Perth’s Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research to support the investigation into the hardest to treat cancers.
“This will make a substantial difference to our cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute," Director of the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research Professor Peter Leedman said.
“We will be able to attract and retain even more of the best scientists from across the globe and support them with sophisticated equipment to enable further discoveries about cancer and help develop new treatments,” he said.
MACA Cancer 200 Ride for Research raised $6.9 million in 2021 and has raised $55 million since its inception 11 years ago.
