Matt Birney is a former WA Liberal leader who served in WA parliament from 2001 to 2008. During that time he held the positions of Leader of the Opposition, Shadow State Treasurer for WA, Shadow Minister for Commerce and International Trade and Shadow Minister for Police.
Mr Birney is also a former Deputy Chairman of the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) Joint Standing Committee, which is the body that has oversight responsibility for the CCC.
Mr Birney founded media and investor relations firm Bulls N' Bears in 2015, which he operates in a series of partnerships with Australia’s largest mainstream media brands, including Business News.
Prior to entering Parliament, Mr Birney commenced, owned and operated a string of successful businesses in various fields. These included being one of the founders of large automotive, industrial and mining supply business Goldfields Auto Spares, self-lock storage business Cunningham Sheds, and the coffee vending machine business Vendwest.
Mr Birney was also the founding non-executive chairman of publicly listed carbon credit supplier Carbon Conscious at the time of its listing and oversaw the signing of carbon credit supply contracts worth up to $180m when fully executed.
After his parliamentary career Mr Birney led the Coventry’s automotive and industrial spare parts business (now known as Covs Parts).
Mr Birney was a 2003 Business News 40under40 winner.
