The first stage of Carnegie Clean Energy’s wave energy farm off the coast of Albany is under way, with the installation of a wave data buoy last week.
With completion planned for 2020, the $50 million project includes state and federal funding, and is expected to create about 1 megawatt of energy.
Perth-based Carnegie will install a CETO 6 unit at Sandpatch near Albany.
The recently installed buoy will measure wave height, period and energy spectra, with the information transmitted to Carnegie’s CETO team.
Carnegie chief executive Michael Ottaviano highlighted the impressive nature of Albany’s coast for the project.
“Albany is one of the greatest wave energy resources in the world,” Mr Ottaviano said
"We have been overwhelmed with the response from the Albany community and we are determined to ensure Albany becomes a global leader renewable energy.
“We are delighted that we will be proving our CETO 6 design in Western Australia - our home state.”
The project will include common user infrastructure, allowing other wave energy providers to access the resource.
