Good Sammy, a cornerstone of Western Australia’s community since 1958, is inviting locals to explore the many ways the social enterprise is making a difference beyond its popular op-shops.
Through its #DiscoverGoodStuff campaign, Good Sammy is showcasing the full range of initiatives that support local communities and create meaningful employment for Western Australians with disabilities. More than 50 per cent of the Good Sammy workforce identifies as having a disability.
As one of WA’s largest social enterprises and well-loved charity, Good Sammy operates a variety of initiatives designed to make a positive social and environmental impact. In addition to its network of op-shops, Good Sammy runs a diverse range of services including the state’s largest Containers for Change operation, the Good Thanks Café, Good Sammy Academy, an online e-commerce store, and Gardening and Property Care services.
“We are about much more than just op-shops," Good Sammy chief executive officer Kane Blackman said.

These initiatives contribute to a thriving local economy while offering meaningful work opportunities for people with disabilities. “We are about much more than just op-shops,” said chief executive officer of Good Sammy, Kane Blackman. “Every program we run helps build a more inclusive and sustainable future for Western Australians, all while providing vital employment and skill-building opportunities for people with disabilities.”
Containers for Change
Good Sammy’s Containers for Change operation is a win for people, the planet, and greater purpose, helping drive recycling efforts across the state. Not only does it provide a convenient way for Western Australians to return their empty containers, but it also contributes directly to Good Sammy’s mission.
“We’re proud to be able to offer people the opportunity to triple their impact when they recycle with Good Sammy,” Mr Blackman said. “Not only do customers get money in their pockets, but we also receive extra funds to continue providing job opportunities and supporting people with disabilities. Together, we are making a tangible difference to our environment and local communities.”
Each container returned to a Good Sammy refund point is worth 10 cents to the customer, with an additional 7 cents supporting Good Sammy’s ongoing work in disability employment. This collaboration between the community and Good Sammy has created a win-win for everyone involved.
In 2024 alone, Good Sammy achieved impressive milestones through the Containers for Change program, including 50 million containers diverted from landfill, 14,400 cubic metresof landfill space saved – equivalent to nearly six Olympic-sized swimming pools – and $5 million refunded to customers.
Containers can be deposited at any five drive-through Good Sammy locations, via bag drop at most of their op shops or at hundreds of community and business recycling points that collect for Good Sammy.
Good Sammy social enterprises include 29 op shops, warehousing and logistics, property and garden maintenance, hospitality, and is the state’s largest for-purpose Containers for Change operator. These social enterprises provide disability employment for over 400 people.
