SportWest chair Liam Twigger says FY25 was a period of “strong performance, strategic progress and growing influence” for the organisation.
A state-based sports advocacy and governance entity, SportWest works with associations, clubs, officials and volunteers across all levels of the sporting pyramid in WA – helping provide all sporting codes a voice, along with promoting a ‘sport for all’ inclusive focus, regardless of ability or other factors.
As is the case with the majority of sporting organisations in WA, SportWest is a not-for-profit organisation.
It posted a surplus of $553,104 in FY25 – up from a loss of $145, 495 during the prior corresponding period.
As of June 30 2025, SportWest had $2.5 million in total current assets, which rose by $981,248 from FY24. Of this amount, $2.47 million was comprised of cash and cash equivalents.
Equally significant, its total equity – courtesy of accumulated surpluses – is now $2.17 million.
In his chair’s address within SportWest’s 2024-25 annual report, Mr Twigger provided some context behind the FY25 surplus, along with praising the company’s commitment to pursuing diverse revenue streams.
“I am pleased to report another year of sound financial performance,” he said.
“Through disciplined management and a continued focus on diversifying revenue, SportWest remains financially strong, stable and well-positioned to sustain its growth and enhance the services we provide to our members and the sporting community.
“A surplus of $553,104 was reported for the 2024-25 financial year which was better than expected but mainly due to timing differences with respect to when revenue is received and recognised in the accounts.
“We expect a reasonable proportion to be reversed in the current financial year.”
Of SportWest’s total revenue of $2.48 million in FY25, around $2.11 million was secured from grant-based revenue, an increase of $262, 398 from FY24 – while activities, sponsorship and fee-based income increased by $20,050 to $366,017.
SportWest also reduced its expenses from ordinary activities by $18,894 to $235,496, which was aided by reduced travel/accommodation and professional services costs, while contractor fee expenses were also reduced from $107,167 to $30,680 in FY25.
During its AGM on Wednesday, Lachlan Dale and Carla Brayn were appointed to the SportWest board, with Nicole Horrocks and Struan Burges departing.
Ms Brayn is the general manager of people and culture at WA Cricket, while Mr Dale is chief executive of Baseball WA.
