SportWest has appointed Sharon Wood-Kenney as its cultural navigation lead.
Ms Wood-Kenney joins the sport advocacy organisation with more than 20 years of experience across Western Australia’s sporting landscape – and has a deep passion for inclusion, education and enhancing respect for Aboriginal culture.
“I am so grateful to be working alongside ‘good humans’ with the team at SportWest,” Ms Wood-Kenney said.
“We aim to create innovative, inclusive training opportunities designed to create positive cultural shift and strive for equity.
“I look forward to working closely with SportWest so they can leave behind an authentic positive legacy.”
In 2012, Ms Wood-Kenney established the Djinda Falcons – a junior Aboriginal football and leadership program, within the West Perth Football Club’s metro district.
Eight years later, she was also inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame due to her impact on WA’s sporting landscape.
Ms Wood-Kenney also worked alongside the WA Football Commission in creating its Reconciliation Action Plan.
"We are thrilled to have Sharon’s experienced and steady hands guiding the organisation as we start on this cultural learning journey," SportWest chief executive officer Troy Kirkham said.
"SportWest has a strong respect for First Nations’ culture and people, and sport has a pivotal role to play in creating the space for these genuine connections in cultures to flourish.”
