US stock markets closed mainly in the red after listless trade, with only poor Japanese data making a dent in action slowed by the northern hemisphere summer holiday.At the closing bell the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 38.52 points (0.29 per cent) at 13,169.43.
