WestStar Industrial subsidiary SIMPEC has secured a $10 million contract at one of Australia’s first waste-to-energy facilities.
SIMPEC has been subcontracted by Spanish company ACCIONA to install pipes at the Avertas Energy facility under development in Kwinana.
The facility is expected to be a new source of dispatchable renewable energy, with 38 megawatts of green energy to process up to 400,000 tonnes of waste each year.
Energy from waste facilities integrate waste disposal and renewable energy supply, simultaneously reducing landfill requirements and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Avertas Energy facility is a co-development between Macquarie Capital and European investment fund DIF.
SIMPEC is expected to complete work under the contract by the end of the year.
ACCIONA was appointed as the lead engineering contractor to the project in October 2018.
SIMPEC managing director Mark Dimasi thanked ACCIONA for its cooperation during the tendering phase.
“Our nightshift team currently on the Avertas Energy project have proven our ability to deliver safely and to our client’s expectations," Mr Dimasi said.
“This large piping package exposes our business to the new wave of producing cleaner energy and allows the business to recruit for a local project, supporting local employment and business."
“These are great benefits to WA and SIMPEC is proud to play a part.
Shares in WestStar, which acquired SIMPEC in mid-2017, closed up 12.5 per cent on today's news to trade at 1.8 cents.
