The self-storage provider proposed two warehouses covering more than 7,600 square metres of land, an office, and associated parking on Welshpool Road East in Wattle Grove.
At its meeting on Tuesday morning, the Metro Outer Development Assessment Panel unanimously approved National Storage’s plan.
The site is in the Maddington Kenwick Strategic Employment Area.
“This is our second last block of land in the MKSEA,” City of Kalamunda mayor Margaret Thomas said at the meeting.
“The residents of the City of Kalamunda would love having a national storage placed so close with the smaller blocks that we have.”
Planning consultant MW Urban, on behalf of National Storage, submitted the development application.
“The development of National Storage facilities is based on the demand for the service (being self-storage units),” the application read.
“Demand comes from the community, both residential and business.
“Where demand is increasing, the basis for this involves several factors including changing lifestyles and business practices.”
In the application, MW Urban lists a shift to urban living as one of the factors for an increase in off-site personal storage demands.
“Local businesses with space limitations take up storage space, a more viable and appealing alternative to shifting premises; and on-line shopping (e-commerce), which has led to an increase in longer-term storage and warehousing needs by business, particularly small business,” the application read.
“In addition to the above, COVID19 resulted in increased demand for storage space.
“The pandemic resulted in the decluttering of households, with more people working from home needing extra space; with supply chain issues resulting in demand for more storage for longer periods.”
Earlier this month, a DAP approved National Storage’s $6 million plan to build a facility in South Fremantle.
National Storage also recently received approvals from the cities of Rockingham and Wanneroo for warehouses in Port Kennedy and Butler, respectively.
