After five years of revenue growth, Business News has made three key editorial appointments as part of its efforts to continue leading the state in its coverage of news and opinion.
The appointments mark the first structural change in the editorial department for several years.
Senior journalist Jack McGinn will become deputy editor with responsibility for the flagship fortnightly magazine and a mandate to drive the integration of Business News' industry-leading data into the printed publication.
McGinn started as a journalist at the Geraldton Guardian, followed by stints at Aspermont's Mining News, in Seven West Media's custom publishing department and at Stockhead.
Isabel Vieira will step into the chief of staff role, directing the online coverage and continuing to edit the groundbreaking Power 500 annual publication. Vieira started her journalism career at the Albany Advertiser before joining Business News in 2022.
Finally, Elisha Newell will take on the new position as editorial's head of data, a role for which she is uniquely skilled due to her time as WA's only data journalist.
Her job will be to drive data integration on the Business News website, while looking for new data sets and exploring technology that will augment the work of Business News' four-member research team.
She joined Business News last year after starting her career at The Market Herald (now The Market Online) and then spending three years at Proactive Investors.
The three new appointees will report directly to Sean Cowan, who steps into the role of executive editor, aligning with international nomenclature and strengthening Business News’ collaboration with its AABP partners in the United States.
Cowan said the appointments reflected the organisation’s ongoing evolution.
“This is an exciting time for Business News," he said.
"Over the past five years, we’ve grown to a size and influence where a more structured editorial leadership team is essential.
"Jack, Isabel and Elisha each bring unique strengths and expertise that will allow us to continue delivering trusted, relevant and engaging journalism to our audience. These changes set us up for the future as we continue to grow and innovate in the Western Australian media landscape.”
