NATIONAL aged-care provider Regis Group has announced plans to build a 274-bed aged-care facility in Nedlands after it was unable to sell the site on Monash Avenue.
The group has decided to maintain full ownership of the Hollywood Village site after an extensive expression of interest phase, in which no suitable buyer could be found for the 7.4-hectare precinct.
Residents of Regis' three existing aged-care facilities at the site - Park Lodge, Weston Lodge and Elloura Lodge - will be offered places at the new facility once it is completed.
"The building of the new aged-care facility and the addition of 40 new beds will not only provide a state-of-the-art home to our current residents, it is an investment in much needed new facilities to meet future demand in Western Australia," Regis Group chief executive Ross Johnston said in a statement.
"With most aged-care providers not in a position to commit to further building, the Regis Group is continuing in its commitment to provide older Australians with quality housing and care and respond to the challenge of an ageing population."
The aged-care facility is estimated to take up a quarter of the site, while negotiations are continuing over plans to subdivide the remainder of the precinct.
Subdivision of the site has been blocked by a memorial on the title, which is controlled by 150 residents of the village.
The plans include a multi-storey facility offering low- and high-level care, as well as a dementia-specific unit.
Clearing of land for the development is expected to commence early next month, with the facility expected to open early in 2012.
The Regis Group owns and operates seven aged-care facilities in WA, and has recently completed construction of a new wing at its Regis Forrest Gardens facility in Bunbury.
