As a part of their global Tools for Life Program, specialist technical services provider Mader Group has completed a major construction project for the Kijilamatambo Primary School in Solwezi, Zambia.
Completed in partnership with First Quantum Minerals (FQM) subsidiary, Kansanshi Mining PLC, the collaboration oversaw the construction of a solar-powered ablution block for the large school community, underscoring the organisations’ dedication to social responsibility and their undertaking to create a positive impact in the regions where they operate.
Mader's involvement with the Solwezi primary school dates back to 2017, marked by their engagement with the Solwezi Round Table through the Rotary of Solwezi. Initial support led to the funding and construction of a classroom block, completed in 2018. Since then, the community has experienced remarkable growth, with the school now catering to over 1,000 students, highlighting the need for additional facilities.

Recognising the potential to enhance the educational environment, Mader initiated the new project, this time in collaboration with FQM, to construct a solar-powered ablution block. Completed in November 2023, the community celebrated the handover of the facility with an opening ceremony attended by the Solwezi Deputy Mayor, Mr. Alex Pupe; representatives from the Provincial Education Office, Mader Technical Specialist, Masautso Phiri; and FQM Assistant General Manager, Colin Du Plessis.
Senior Headman Mulowanyama also attended the affair, expressing gratitude on behalf of His Royal Highness Chief Kapijimpanga, to Mader Group and FQM’s Kansanshi Mining PLC for their contribution to the community.
Mader Group Chief Executive, Justin Nuich, commented that the collaboration with FQM was a deeply rewarding experience.
“Witnessing the impact of our joint efforts on the local community reinforces the significance of corporate social responsibility. We have had a relationship with the Kijilamatambo Primary School for a long time now and the team at FQM have been instrumental in helping us bring this latest vision to life.”
“They played a pivotal role in the design, construction, and management of the project. The ablution block features six toilets with a solar-powered water pumping system and bore, providing a reliable and sustainable source for flushing toilets. With limited facilities formerly available to the school, this project will provide substantial improvements in hygiene, sanitation, and overall well-being for the school community.”
Mader also extends its gratitude to its employees, customers, and industry friends who generously donated to the Kijilamatambo Primary School at the 'Strong Minds, Strong Mines' event last year in October. This event saw Mader CEO Justin Nuich participate in a boxing match against professional boxer, Emiel Nia. The primary school was chosen as Mader’s charity partner for the event, with all funds raised dedicated to supporting the construction effort.
This collaboration is just one pillar in Mader’s extensive Tools for Life Program; a global program that aims to equip individuals and communities with the tools they need to succeed in life. Through this program, Mader is implementing positive change beyond the workplace, paving a bright future for generations to come.
