Amid a surge of investor interest in its flagship rare earths project in Malawi, Lindian Resources is working to advance its financing options with a new executive hire tasked with progressing an existing agreement and recommending further solutions.
Lindian is keen to progress a non-binding agreement for US$50 million (A$79.5m) in stage one funding it has in place with United States-based commodity trader Gerald Metals Group. The company has hired experienced corporate finance advisor Henk Ludik to work with Gerald to advance to a binding term sheet for the project.
Ludik, who will report directly to the Lindian board, has also been tasked with identifying, reviewing and recommending other funding solutions that will benefit the company.
Lindian has courted a flurry of recent investor attention for its flagship Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi, which is acknowledged as one of the world’s largest undeveloped, low-cost potential, near-term production rare earths projects.
The giant project has an initial ore reserve of 23.7 million tonnes, with an impressive average grade of 2.9 per cent total rare earth oxides that underpins a mine life of 45 years. It also has process-friendly metallurgy.
As rare earths continue to play a critical role in the global energy transition, Lindian says investor demand for exposure to high-quality projects such as Kangankunde remains strong.
Perth-based Ludik brings deep expertise in mining finance, with 20 years of experience in mining, investment banking, corporate finance and strategic advice. He has successfully structured and secured project financing for large-scale mining operations across Africa, Australia, the United States and Europe.
Lindian intends to leverage his expertise in capital markets, mergers and acquisitions and investor engagement to navigate its funding negotiations and secure long-term financial partners.
The company says it has already received strong interest globally from multiple partners looking to finance Kangankunde.
Lindian Resources’ non-executive chairman Robert Martin said: “Given the scale and strategic importance of this asset, it is crucial that we have the appropriate skill set to help the Gerald Group move to a binding term sheet and to evaluate the other opportunities and enquirers that the company has been presented, ensuring we secure the most favourable terms for our shareholders.”
From a societal point of view, Malawi is one of the world's least-developed countries, with an economy heavily based on agriculture and a largely rural and growing population. Lindian’s Kangankunde project offers a means to provide important new local employment and small business opportunities and improve local transport connectivity.
On the commodity front, rare earths are maintaining their critical role in the ongoing global energy transition. Kangankunde has a box seat in the market being fully permitted and ready for the next phase of its development, with a just-secured phase one funding agreement and an off-take package from the Gerald.
Added to this, Lindian’s studies indicate the project could generate about 15,300t annually of clean, high-grade total rare earth oxides concentrate for a total of 8400t of rare earth oxides and 1640t of the prized magnet rare earths, neodymium and praseodymium.
