Australia’s National Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has independently tested representative samples of monazite concentrate from Lindian Resources’ Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi and determined it is exempt from radioactive transport classification under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) SSR-6 framework.
ANSTO’s high-resolution gamma spectrometry analysis of two representative samples recorded uranium and thorium activity concentrations well below IAEA exemption thresholds, with actinium‑227 below detection limits.
As a result, shipments will not be subject to Class 7 dangerous goods requirements, eliminating the need for specialised packaging, restricted carriers or additional regulatory oversight.
The clearance hands Kangankunde a clear edge over many rival rare earths projects, where higher levels of radiation attract tougher transport rules, forcing early-stage radionuclide stripping and saddling developers with hefty compliance costs.
The findings are consistent with earlier ANSTO metallurgical testwork, which confirmed ultra-low radionuclide levels in both the concentrate and the mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC), along with 97 per cent NdPr extraction.
Together, the results demonstrate a low-radiological pathway from feedstock through to the final product, reinforcing Kangankunde’s position as a scalable, lower-risk development.
Lindian Resources executive director Zac Komur said: “Independent verification from ANSTO provides clear confirmation of the radiological profile of our Kangankunde concentrate and materially de-risks our pathway to market. ANSTO’s determination that the product is exempt from SSR-6 radioactive transport classification is a significant structural advantage.”
The low intrinsic radioactivity also delivers storage advantages, allowing practical stockpiling for more than 20 years under standard industrial conditions.
Unlike higher-radioactivity products that must be rushed through licensed facilities or early processing, Kangankunde can be stored for the long term, giving Lindian valuable inventory flexibility and aligning the project neatly with emerging sovereign critical minerals stockpiling strategies.
As Lindian advances towards stage one plant construction, with first production targeted for late 2026, the ANSTO validation represents a significant de-risking milestone and enhances Kangankunde’s appeal within the global rare earths supply chain.
