ASX-listed Kingwest Resources has launched an aircore drilling campaign at its Lake Goongarrie project 90km north of Kalgoorlie. The campaign will take aim at litho-structural targets and will punch out 5,000m of drilling. First assays are expected in a couple of weeks. Final single metre re-split assays from previous reverse circulation drilling of “target A9” confirm the composite assays reported last month. The headline high-grade hit of 5m going 8.31 grams per tonne gold includes stellar intersections of 1m grading 16.46g/t gold and 2m at 11.29g/t gold.
The Lake Goongarrie gold project is just 30km south of Kingwest’s flagship Menzies gold project. The company has a pipeline of 10 main target areas within the 125sqkm area which it has named targets “A1” to “A10”.
Target A9, at the southern end of the tenement package, was the subject of a round of reverse circulation drilling earlier this year. The target is interpreted to sit immediately along strike and north-northwest of Ardea Resources’ Aphrodite North prospect and about 10km north-northwest of Bardoc Gold’s 1.7 million-ounce Aphrodite deposit.
Kingwest reported last month that composite assays from A9 had identified thick supergene mineralisation. Final single metre re-split assays are now back from the lab, confirming the earlier results. Significant intersections are 3m going 4.08g/t gold from 89m including 1m at 9.34g/t gold and 5m grading 3.60g/t gold from 45m.
The company says the single metre assays have more clearly delineated the controls on mineralisation and it will now plan further drilling to test the large mineralised system.
Kingwest Chief Executive Officer Ed Turner said: “At Goongarrie south Target A9, assays from single metre re-splits have confirmed the composite results from July and give more definition of the mineralisation controls. Further drilling can now be planned to better test the mineralised system that extends over at least 1km.”
Kingwest has now embarked on a 5,000m aircore blitz at the northern end of the Goongarrie gold project. The area was previously considered inaccessible with targets located beneath the Lake Goongarrie salt lake. A customised track-mounted rig has been deployed to get the drilling underway testing the high-priority A1, A2, A3 and A10 targets.
The company suggests the most promising of the targets to date is A10, which occurs at the intersection of a 500m-wide northwest-trending shear zone and the thick Black Flag conglomerate which, according to Kingwest, shares a similar geological setting to that of the 6.4-million-ounce Kanowna Belle gold deposit about 80km along strike to the south-east.
Drilling at Target A10 is underway with first assays expected in two weeks.
The current campaign will also probe other litho-structural targets and geochemical gold anomalies in the area including the A2 target along strike and to the north-west of A10.
