Job advertisements on the internet increased by 1.9 per cent in January compared to a month earlier, federal figures show.
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations internet vacancy index was 86 points in the month, down 4.9 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms, from a year ago.
Internet-based vacancies increased in all eight occupational groups monitored by the department in November, the data released today shows.
The strongest rises were record in machinery operators and drivers, rising 3.6 per cent, followed by a 2.9 per cent increase in sales workers.
A rise in advertisements was recorded in five of the six states in January, with South Australia bucking the trend with a 0.3 per cent decline.
The biggest monthly rise was in Victoria, increasing 3.4 per cent.
However, declines were posted in both the territories, with the ACT down 2.6 per cent in the month and the Northern Territory easing by 0.1 per cent.
Over the year, however, the NT showed biggest rise with job ads increasing by 19.8 per cent, followed by Queensland up 19.5 per cent and Western Australia up 13.2 per cent.
All other jurisdictions fell, led by an 18.5 per cent drop in Tasmania.
