WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) is embarking on a significant recruitment drive to appoint several exceptional board directors over the next two years. This is part of a strategic renewal process as some of the current directors’ terms come to an end.
Having recently completed its tenth year of operation, WAPHA’s strategic vision is to leverage progress made and translate the Australian Government’s ambitious reform agenda for the benefit of under-served people and communities most at risk of poor health outcomes.
WAPHA began operating in 2015 with a $29 million commissioning budget and has since invested about $1 billion into much needed front-line health care services for the WA community that address gaps and inequities.
The new directors will be instrumental in helping WAPHA achieve its goals by contributing to strategic thinking, innovation, robust governance and visionary leadership.
Chair of the WAPHA Board, Dr. Richard Choong, emphasised the importance of this recruitment process in maintaining the board’s effectiveness and strategic direction.
“We are looking for individuals who can bring a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in primary health care, including in rural and remote contexts, those who appreciate the importance of innovation, and applicants with strategic business and/ or digital expertise who can contribute different perspectives.
“Our goal is to ensure the board continues to have the expertise needed to steward the significant investments from the Australian Government in primary care,” Dr. Choong said.
The board is also committed to reflecting the diversity of Western Australia’s population in its membership. Gender balance and representation from priority populations will be key considerations in the selection process.

Since its inception on July 1, 2015, WAPHA has been dedicated to increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of primary health care services in Western Australia.
As the largest Primary Health Network (PHN) organisation in Australia, WAPHA operates three PHNs in the state and provides shared services to other PHN organisations across the country.
