Prime Minister Scott Morrison has guaranteed his government will deliver the GST distribution solution promised under Malcolm Turnbull's leadership before the next election, and will even consider legislation if necessary.
Mr Morrison said he passionately believed in the 75 cents floor plan and (that) Western Australians could trust him, but added he would not allow Labor to unravel the issue with tricky politics.
"I have been championing this for two years as the treasurer and I've been able to deliver the solution," Mr Morrison told 6PR radio in Perth on Tuesday.
Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a package to resolve the ongoing GST distribution problems for WA earlier this year, committing to a $7 billion funding boost to soften the transition to the new formula.
The deal would mean states have their revenue lifted through the GST system to be equal on a per capita basis to the level NSW or Victoria.
That contrasts with the existing system, where states have revenue lifted to the capacity of WA, currently the top-performing state.
Effectively, the proposal means there will be a reduced need to take GST revenue from stronger states to give to weaker states.
It followed years of campaigning on the issue, including bipartisan support in state parliament.
