Grain farmer Mic Fels has been preselected to contest the Swan electorate for the Liberal Party at the 2025 federal election.
Mr Fels is best known as an Esperance farmer and agricultural advocate who runs the 6,070-hectare Halcyon Downs grain farm on the south coast of Western Australia.
However, he also has property in South Perth and runs an ag tech business in the Swan electorate.
Mr Fels was selected by Swan delegates on Tuesday night ahead of former Perth Wildcats boss Nick Marvin and Indigenous Army veteran Matthew Evans.
His nomination will now go to the Liberal state council for endorsement.
The Swan electorate covers a mix of affluent postcodes such as South Perth and Victoria Park, multicultural areas of Cannington and Belmont, and assets such as the Perth Airport, Curtin University, Perth Stadium and Welshpool industrial estate.
Easternmost areas of Swan will be absorbed by the new Bullwinkel electorate at next year’s election.
That move will make Swan more Labor friendly as it removes a host of Liberal-leaning suburbs from the electorate.
The seat is held by Labor backbencher Zaneta Mascarenhas by a margin of 8.8 per cent.
Ms Mascarenhas won the seat from the Liberal Party in 2022.
Liberal Steven Irons had held the seat since 2007.
Swan’s most prominent member was former opposition leader Kim Beazley who held Swan for 16 years.
