Estrella Resources has been handed the keys to a potentially sizeable copper-gold prize in Timor-Leste after securing government approval to launch its maiden drilling campaign at the intriguing Laleno Dome prospect.
The ASX-listed explorer has received the all-clear from Timor-Leste's National Minerals Authority to drill the previously untouched geological structure, with earthworks and access track preparations kicking off immediately ahead of drilling expected to begin early next week.
The campaign will put the company's porphyry copper-gold theory to its first serious test after geophysical surveys, surface sampling and petrographic analysis delivered an encouraging set of exploration clues.
Of particular interest are several high-conductivity anomalies resembling plumes rising from depths along the dome's flanks, identified by Estrella's Mobile MTd geophysical survey.
The company believes the intriguing anomalies could point towards a larger mineralised system lurking beneath the surface, potentially associated with porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation.
Adding weight to the geological theory, recent petrographic work has supported the company's interpretation of a possible porphyry system, with copper mineralisation identified at nine separate locations around the dome.
Porphyry deposits are among the world's most sought-after copper exploration prizes, prized for their potential to host enormous volumes of mineralisation capable of underpinning long-life mining operations.
While Laleno remains an untested prospect, widespread copper occurrences and deep-seated conductive targets have given Estrella plenty of encouragement to fire up the rigs.
The initial drilling will probe shallow conductivity targets and a gently dipping conductive anomaly interpreted as a possible manganese-bearing horizon, alongside prospective near-surface porphyry outcrops.
Estrella Resources managing director Robert Mencel said: "This is a significant moment for Estrella. Laleno Dome is a large structure that has never been tested, and we are now approved to put the first holes into this extensive prospect."
The drilling campaign adds another potentially valuable string to Estrella's growing Timor-Leste exploration bow, where the company is building a multi-commodity portfolio spanning manganese, limestone, copper and gold.
Estrella's manganese ambitions are already gathering momentum, with about 27,000 tonnes of material excavated from its Ira Miri deposit for a bulk-sample market appraisal exercise aimed at testing commercial demand.
Meanwhile, the company has beefed up its mammoth Werumata limestone project in country, upgrading 274 million tonnes to the higher-confidence indicated category within a revised 533-million-tonne resource, strengthening its development credentials as feasibility planning advances.
For Estrella, the upcoming exploration campaign represents a significant step from promising geological interpretation towards the hard evidence only drilling can deliver.
With permits secured, targets identified, and drill preparations underway, the company is now poised to find out whether the tantalising clues scattered across Laleno Dome point to something much bigger beneath the Timorese landscape.
