Dateline Resources has launched a 10,000m drilling assault at its 1.1-million-ounce Colosseum project in California, targeting both gold and rare earths discoveries through to the end of this year. The company says its program of infill and extensional drilling around Colosseum’s existing gold resources will feed into its ongoing and accelerated bankable feasibility study, due early next year.
Dateline Resources has launched a 10,000-metre drilling assault at its 1.1-million-ounce Colosseum gold and rare earths project in California, targeting resource expansion and newly identified rare earths prospects at the strategic United States project.
The extensive program pairs an externally sourced reverse circulation (RC) with the company’s own diamond drilling rigs to assault its dual commodity project from now through to the end of this year.
Dateline says its program of infill and extensional drilling around Colosseum’s existing gold resources will feed into its ongoing and accelerated bankable feasibility study (BFS) on the project. The company is eager to get its project up and running in an unstoppable record gold price environment.
The campaign will scrutinise six newly identified breccia pipe anomalies, uncovered by recent 3D magnetotelluric and gravity surveys, which the company says mirror the geophysical signatures of Colosseum’s known gold-bearing North and South pipes.
The pipes have historically produced 344,000 ounces of gold and underpin the current resource, which remains open below 250m depth. New modelling suggests extensions could easily continue to 550m.
Priority program targets include Target 5, a massive 500m by 300m anomaly plunging to 900m depth, and Target 6, a 300-square-metre “bullseye” reaching down to 700m.
Targets 2 and 3 lie east of the North Pit and suggest a potential connected system at depth, while Target 4 offers near-surface potential.
The geophysical anomalies united with geochemical data from felsite outcrops have sharpened Dateline’s focus on delineating new gold ounces.
A parallel geotechnical drilling program will gather critical data on rock stability and ground conditions, feeding into mine design for the BFS, which is slated for an early 2026 completion.
Dateline Resources managing director Stephen Baghdadi said: “By utilising our in-house diamond rig alongside Major Drilling’s high-powered RC rig, we can significantly increase the pace and scope of drilling, allowing us to tackle mineral resource infill, extensional drilling, and new target testing all at once. The ability to drill more metres faster will fast-track the Colosseum BFS and shorten the timeline to first gold production.”
Colosseum’s endowment currently sits within a 27.1-million-tonne resource grading 1.26 grams per tonne (g/t) gold for 1.1-million-ounces. A May scoping study update estimated the project has a net present value of US$550 million (A$850 million) with a swift 19-month payback period at a $4380 an ounce gold price. Today the gold price reached a new record of $5500 an ounce.
While gold takes center stage, Dateline is also advancing its rare earths exploration at the project that sits less than 10 kilometres from the strategically prominent Mountain Pass mine – the US’s only rare earths mine.
The company says its deep-seated resistivity anomalies at Colosseum point to potential carbonatite-hosted mineralisation akin to Mountain Pass and Australia’s world-class Mt Weld operation. The project offers a dual-value opportunity in a region critical to the US’s green energy and tech supply chains.
Recent US government support, including letters from the Secretary of the Interior affirming Colosseum’s rights for gold and rare earths production and a high-profile endorsement from President Donald Trump hailing it as “America’s second rare earths mine”, has further elevated the project’s profile. The momentum culminated in a significant coffer resupply, worth $25 million, through Dateline’s institutional capital raise last month.
Dateline, with more than $35 million in funding in the bank, is now fully funded for the latest drilling campaign and several beyond.
With two rigs already drilling and a third mobilising, Dateline looks ready to continue its steady stream of positive results. As the BFS progresses and rare earths potential adds a compelling kicker, this California play could be staring down a first gold financing decision in a matter of months rather than years.
