A challenge against the Western Australian government's approval of a gas hub in the Kimberley will go to court today, despite Woodside Petroleum shelving its original plans for the project.
Woodside dumped plans for its LNG facility in the Browse Basin in April, but the WA government still wants to make the area available for future projects.
The matter will be heard in the WA Supreme Court, where the Wilderness Society and Goolarabooloo lawman Richard Hunter will argue that the Environmental Protection Authority assessment process had conflicts of interest, resulting in just one EPA board member making the final decision.
The applicants are seeking orders that the EPA report and WA environment minister's approval for the gas hub be overturned.
Woodside, which was previously a respondent in the case, has applied to be excused from court.
