In a property market defined by complexity, speed and continual change, one thing is increasingly clear, the organisations that invest in their people will be best placed to perform, adapt and lead.
In a property market defined by complexity, speed and continual change, one thing is increasingly clear, the organisations that invest in their people will be best placed to perform, adapt and lead.
That is why I am pleased to announce the release of the new 2026-27 UDIA WA Educate course guide, which features a suite of professional development programs that are designed specifically for Western Australia’s urban development industry.
At UDIA WA, we are committed to being the trusted “go to” for members and other industry professionals seeking high-quality, industry-specific professional development, and this latest guide reflects both the breadth of our sector and the evolving skills it now demands.
The case for investing in capability is compelling. For employers, supporting staff to undertake targeted professional development is not simply a learning and development exercise; it is a business decision. It is about strengthening engagement, improving retention, lifting productivity and building the internal capability needed for stronger performance and succession planning. For individuals, it is about demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement, building practical and relevant skills, and creating valuable connections with peers and leaders across the industry.
The new UDIA WA Educate Course Guide has been shaped with this in mind, offering tailored opportunities across the full development lifecycle, with courses that respond to both foundational capability needs and emerging priorities in the market.
Importantly, UDIA WA is an approved CPD training provider under the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety’s Property Industry CPD - Real Estate category. Course completion attracts CPD points across a mix of in-person and virtual formats, with a growing range of specialist offerings for professionals working across the housing continuum from new land to built form.
What is on offer
One of the strongest features of the 2026-27 program is its relevance to the real issues professionals are facing today. Productivity, feasibility, risk management, stakeholder coordination, environmental approvals, sustainability and the application of technology are all covered across the different courses on offer.
A good example is Project Feasibility, Risk & Finance in Property Development. This two-day course, running in July, is designed to help participants better understand market analysis, financial metrics, project risk, funding strategies and financial modelling, while also exploring how feasibility, finance and risk can be aligned to improve outcomes.
In an environment where margins are tight and project conditions can shift quickly, these are essential commercial skills for development professionals and decision-makers alike, with presenters from the local WA context able to ensure learnings are bespoke to the WA industry.
Another clear highlight is the program’s response to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and digital capability. A new course this year, is Applied AI for Urban Development Professionals, a practical course focused on what AI can and cannot do in an urban development context, how it can support tasks such as reporting, feasibility review, planning summaries and marketing content, and how professionals can use it responsibly while avoiding common risks such as over-reliance, data leakage and inaccurate outputs.
This is complemented by AI Risk & Governance for Urban Development Leaders, which is aimed at senior leaders and explores AI adoption, governance frameworks, policy development and enterprise-level risk. Together, these courses recognise that AI is no longer a future concept for our sector, but a current leadership and productivity opportunity (and challenge).
Understanding the development process from conception to delivery
UDIA WA Educate also continues to provide practical learning opportunities for professionals who need an end-to-end understanding of urban development projects.
Foundations of Property Development – Residential Land is our flagship six-day course that remains a valuable offering for graduates, emerging professionals and those transitioning into the sector, delivering a broad overview of the property development process in WA through local expert-led sessions.
We have also now created a brand new Foundations of Property Development – Townhouses and Apartments which is a two day course that provides a practical end-to-end introduction to planning, designing, assessing and delivering quality medium and higher density residential development, in infill areas and as part of new communities.
Likewise, Introduction to Civil Construction for Residential Projects provides hands-on insight into civil construction from concept and design through to approvals, construction and handover, including a site visit component that strengthens the connection between theory and practice.
These kinds of programs are particularly beneficial for professionals who want to improve cross-disciplinary understanding and operate more effectively within increasingly complex project teams.
Environmental capability is another area of importance, particularly as project planning and delivery continue to intersect with detailed state and federal regulatory requirements.
Introduction to Environmental Assessment & Approvals provides participants a clearer understanding of environmental approval pathways, early risk identification, engagement with regulators and consultants, and the practical strategies needed to navigate relevant approvals in Western Australia more effectively.
Courses like this help professionals make better decisions earlier in the project lifecycle, which is something that can translate directly into reduced risk, time savings and overall better outcomes for the project and the environment.
Bespoke mentoring opportunities
On top of the industry specific learning courses, UDIA WA also offers an Emerging Leaders program that focuses on fostering tomorrow’s leaders. The program includes optional six month industry mentoring that is available to UDIA WA members only.
The Outlook Mentoring Program also supports early-career professionals over an up to eight month period through structured development, one-on-one mentoring, cohort sessions and broader industry exposure.
These opportunities are a chance to build on technical training, through strategic learning and people development that allows participants to grow in confidence, improve industry connections and build leadership capability.
For businesses, taking a strategic view of professional development needs can be a critical aspect of talent retention and growth.
In a competitive labour market, professional development is one of the strongest ways to signal to staff that they are valued and that their future matters. It can also help organisations future-proof their teams by building stronger internal pipelines of knowledge, leadership and technical capability.
This is particularly relevant in the property industry, where projects are multidisciplinary, timelines are pressured and the operating environment is constantly shifting.
UDIA WA Educate brings together respected industry experts, relevant subject matter and practical learning experiences tailored to the needs of Western Australian property professionals. Our 2026-27 course guide has been developed for the real world of our industry, and for the people who will shape its future.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank our Education Partner, Stockland, along with the many dedicated industry experts who work with us to deliver these courses. Their contribution helps ensure the UDIA WA Educate program continues to support professionals in reaching their full potential.
