Former Under Treasurer and Mental Health Commissioner Tim Marney will join the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia as its chief economist.
Mr Marney served as WA’s Under Treasurer for nearly a decade before becoming the Mental Health Commissioner of WA for five years.
He also served on the board of the WA Treasury Corporation for more than 10 years, as both chair and deputy chair.
Mr Marney was chief economist at international management consultancy Nous Group until January this year.
Prior to Nous Group, he was on the board of directors at beyondblue for more than 11 years.
In April, Mr Marney was appointed to implement a newly developed model of care at Banksia Hill Detention Centre, joining the Department of Justice.
Mr Marney is on the board of Reconciliation WA, Richmond Wellbeing, and the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre.
CMEWA chief executive Rebecca Tomkinson said Mr Marney’s appointment would bolster the strength of the policy and advocacy team, noting his more than 30 years of experience.
“Tim’s appointment will reinforce the credibility of our economic analysis and commentary on the mining and resources sector in Western Australia, relating to commodity prices, cost and incentive structures, investment trends, and global economic conditions,” she said.
“At a time when our sector continues to pour billions into the national and state economy, and is positioning itself as a key player in the global transition to net zero thanks to our abundance of critical minerals, having Tim’s strategic leadership skills and economic expertise will be an invaluable asset to the team.”
CMEWA also recruited Aaron Walker as its new manager of industry competitiveness and economics.
Mr Walker has more than a decade of experience across financial roles, including as senior economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia, and project analyst at Wesfarmers.
Mr Marney and Mr Walker will start at CMEWA on Monday.
