Byrnecut worker dies at SA mine

A Byrnecut underground worker has been fatally injured at OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill mine in South Australia.

Today, Adelaide's OZ Minerals said it had temporarily suspended operations at Prominent Hill, located southwest of Coober Pedy, after a Byrnecut employee had died on Sunday.

The worker was reportedly crushed by mining equipment and died at the scene.

OZ Minerals said the incident was being investigated by South Australian police and Safework SA.

“Byrnecut and OZ Minerals express our deepest sympathies to the worker’s family,” OZ Minerals managing director Andrew Cole said.

“This incident has had a profound impact on our workforce and our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone at site.

“Byrnecut and OZ Minerals are providing support to the worker’s family during this very difficult time.”

Perth Airport-based Byrnecut has provided services at Prominent Hill since 2010 and is also the underground contractor for OZ Minerals' Carrapateena operation near Lake Torrens.
