From Humble Beginnings to National Impact

In 1980, a young Nigel Satterley took a leap that would shape the future of residential development in Australia. Armed with vision, grit and an ambition to build more than just houses, he founded Satterley Property Group. Forty-five years on, that decision has led to the creation of over 225 masterplanned communities, home to around half a million Australians, and has placed Satterley at the forefront of the nation’s development industry.
Early Life and Entrepreneurial Foundations
Nigel Satterley’s story begins in the wheatbelt town of Cunderdin, where he spent his childhood in a close-knit rural setting. He left school at 16 and soon after took a job at a clothing wholesaler in Midland. By 20, Satterley had secured the Western Australian distributorship for Levi Jeans, rapidly establishing himself as one of the state’s top sales performers. This early business success was marked by a work ethic and confidence that would become hallmarks of his later career.
His growing commercial instincts led him to cross paths with Sir James McCusker, the founder of Town and Country Building Society. McCusker recognised Satterley’s potential and encouraged him to consider property development. That advice planted the seed for a career that would shift the course of Australian land development.
Statesman Homes and the Birth of a Vision
In the 1970s, Satterley established Statesman Homes. The business flourished, with the company constructing up to 650 homes annually. But his vision was broader than just building homes. He wanted to shape entire communities. So, in 1980, Satterley sold Statesman and launched Satterley Property Group, focused exclusively on land development.
Drawing on the values of his country upbringing, he pursued the creation of communities that mirrored the spirit of Cunderdin: inclusive, well-planned and socially connected. This translated into a model of masterplanned estates that integrated housing with parks, schools and local amenities – an approach that has since become standard in the industry.
An Industry Leader in Community Creation

Over four and a half decades, Satterley has grown into Australia’s largest privately owned residential land developer. Its communities now span Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland. While the scale has increased, the mission remains unchanged – to create places where people belong.
The company’s portfolio reflects that commitment. Projects like Brighton, Allara, and Seaside have set benchmarks in sustainable design, affordability and community building. Satterley’s leadership in urban design has earned the company more than 120 industry awards, with ongoing acclaim for its innovation and delivery.
Nigel Satterley himself has become a trusted voice in the sector, known for advocating for housing affordability, streamlined planning and practical reform. His influence extends beyond business to philanthropy. Alongside his wife Denise, he has consistently donated five percent of annual pre-tax income to causes including women’s refuges, medical research, youth education and guide dogs. The company has also contributed land to more than 50 charity homes auctioned in support of organisations such as Telethon and the My Room Children’s Cancer Charity. This generosity and success culminated in Satterley recently being crowned the Western Australian of the Year in the category of Business.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
As the business celebrates its 45-year milestone, it remains future-focused.
The strategic direction for the coming years is focused on steady, considered growth and continued operational refinement. Satterley is actively exploring new avenues to diversify its portfolio and enhance its delivery model, including emerging housing typologies and expanded commercial interests. Plans are also underway to broaden the company’s geographic footprint with targeted acquisitions across key growth areas in Western Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.
The business is also deeply focused on its people.
From a broader industry perspective, Nigel Satterley highlighted the importance of policy reform and housing supply. While he acknowledged welcome steps at both state and federal levels, including investment in planning reform and national housing incentives, he emphasised the need for faster approvals and more serviced land to meet demand.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
As Nigel Satterley prepares to mark nearly five decades at the helm, he remains actively engaged, frequently visiting estates and shaping the business with the same passion that launched it. His journey from country WA to national industry leader is more than a success story – it is a reflection of the values, resilience and vision that define the company.
Satterley’s 45th anniversary is not just a celebration of what has been achieved, but a statement of intent for what lies ahead. With a clear strategy, a dedicated team and a legacy of community building, the business is well positioned to meet the future with confidence.
