Premier Colin Barnett has confirmed Mines Minister Norman Moore is being considered for the post of the state's agent-general in London.
If Mr Moore is appointed, it will mean a cabinet reshuffle, perhaps by the end of this year.
The state opposition this week said Mr Moore, who is also fisheries minister, should not be given the London post because he had no private sector experience, having served in parliament for 34 years.
Manager of Opposition Business Mark McGowan told parliament the agent-general post was a diplomatic one and should not be tied to a political party.
Mr Barnett said on Friday there might be small Cabinet changes to portfolios at the end of the year but not a major reshuffle.
"It is true that Norman Moore did approach me a couple of months ago and said he was interested in the position and we've had a couple of chats about that," he told Fairfax Radio.
The premier said the current agent-general in London, Kerry Sanderson, was due to continue in the post until the end of December.
"Some time before then the government will make a decision."
