BGC backs FIFO Families

BGC Contracting has joined forces with Western Australian business FIFO Families to offer the mining and civil contractor's 2,000 fly-in, fly-out workers and their families access to extra support.

FIFO Families director Nicole Ashby won a Business News 40under40 award this year for creating and operating a support group for FIFO parents and their families.

Ms Ashby said the partnership with BGC meant the company would buy membership for all of its FIFO workers.

“This partnership will allow (BGC) families and couples to access support, guidance and educational advice, so they can get the most from their FIFO lifestyle,” she said.

Ms Ashby told Business News the deal would make a significant difference to the company, which has five staff and 57 volunteers.

FIFO Families has previously signed partnership agreements with Rio Tinto, Ausdrill, Cliffs Natural Resources, John Holland, Kentz and Shell.

BGC Contracting announced the partnership at the opening of its new head office in Osborne Park.

Chief executive Greg Heylen said it was extremely serious about maintaining the welfare and safety of its employees.

“Those who have to spend long periods working on remote sites face unique pressures in their family lives and we have a duty to provide them with adequate support,” he said.

As part of the deal, FIFO Families received a cheque for $115,830, representing BGC Contracting’s initial investment, which will be increased over time.
