Developer Aventuur was leased the 5.7 hectare lot on Prinsep Road in Jandakot to develop a new recreational sport and leisure precinct, anchored by a brand-new surf park, from the state government in June 2022.
Set to be the largest surf park of its kind this side of the globe, the site is set to include accommodation, restaurants, a health and wellness centre, leisure amenities, and conference and function facilities.
It will also be the first surf park in Western Australia, according to US-based Aventuur.
Nearly six months later and Aventuur has referred to the proposal to the WA Environmental Protection Authority, with a seven-day comment period open to the public.
Up to 5.26 hectares of native vegetation, including nearly 3.2 hectares of Banksia Woodlands-listed priority ecological community, and potential black cocktatoo habitat could be cleared to make way for the development.
The proposed Wavegarden ‘cove’ surfing lagoon will span 2.2 hectares and be able to accommodate up to 84 users at any one time.
Construction is expected to start in June 2023 and take two years to build through to July 2025.
Costs to build increased to $100 million after an initial $80 million estimate due to general rising costs.
The project is expected to create about 260 jobs during planning and construction, and about 65 full-time positions once operational.
