Junior explorer Athena Resources has appointed Peter Jones as its managing director and chief executive, effective from February 17.
The appointment comes on the back of news last month that magnetite-focused Athena had begun test work during the December 2024 quarter at its Byro project, located 220km south-east of Carnarvon.
As part of this, the company said a 30km sample of magnetite was being prepped for testing at its iron ore tech centre, in a bid to recover pure levels of iron from iron ores.
An experienced accountant and executive, Mr Jones joins Athena after more than 10 years with West Perth-based Sinosteel Midwest Corporation, which has several iron ore tenements throughout the state’s mid-west region.
During his tenure, Mr Jones provided a key pillar of management in relation to the company’s exploration programs, along with budgeting and feasibility study requirements.
“Peter’s extensive relevant experience in the mid-west, and his many achievements with Sinosteel, makes him a perfect match with our ambitions for the byro magnetite project,” Athena chair John Welborn said.
“Peter’s immediate focus will be to evaluate the comprehensive review of Byro and design and implement a pathway for further exploration, feasibility studies and ultimately the successful commercial development of the project.”
In December last year, Fenix Resources secured a 19.84 per cent stake in Athena, which increased to 28.97 per cent by the end of the quarter, following the junior’s $2.67 million capital raise.
Athena last traded at $0.4 cents.
