Sandy Anghie has declared she won’t be making a third run for the role of Perth Lord Mayor, the post vacated by now WA Liberal Party leader Basil Zempilas.
Ms Anghie took to Linkedin to say she won’t be running as a Perth Mayoral candidate come October, instead electing to focus on her Perth Design Week commitments.
“It’s the year of elections - State, Federal and also Local Government. And in City of Perth there will be an election for a new Lord Mayor this year,” she wrote.
“In the past 18 months, particularly since the resignation of the former Lord Mayor, people have been asking me whether I will be standing for election again.”
She finished her social media post by writing “with all of these commitments I am no longer able to commit to being a #fulltime Lord Mayor. So I won’t be in the running come October.”
Ms Anghie initially ran for Lord Mayor in the October 2020 local government elections. She was defeated by Basil Zempilas at that election and again in 2023.
Given Mr Zempilas’ narrow election to the seat of Churchlands and as the WA Liberal Party’s leader, it was widely expected that Ms Anghie would throw her hat in the ring again.
Ms Anghie, who has spearheaded Perth Design Week for the past three years, said the decision was largely based on her commitment to the design-based event.
“It was a difficult decision for me to make, whether I’d run or not, having put a lot of time into it last time,” she told Business News.
“A lot of people have put a lot of time into Perth Design Week and I’ve made a commitment to deliver that which I cannot walk away from.”
Currently acting in the role of Perth Lord Mayor is Councillor Bruce Reynolds.
