Woodside Energy has announced the successful arrival of the final Pluto Train 2 modules at the Pluto LNG facility in Karratha, Western Australia. This significant milestone marks the completion of the Pluto Train 2 module program, a key component of the Scarborough Energy Project.
The journey of the 51 modules that form Pluto Train 2 began earlier this year, with the first modules delivered in February having been transported from the fabrication yard in Batam, Indonesia. The expansion of the Pluto LNG Facility to include a second LNG processing train will enable the processing of gas from the offshore Scarborough field.
Once operational, Pluto Train 2 will have the capacity to process approximately 5 million tonnes of LNG per annum. Additionally, new domestic gas infrastructure has been integrated into the project, offering 225 terajoules per day of capacity to the Western Australian market.
Bechtel was selected by Woodside to execute the engineering, procurement and construction of Pluto Train 2, with construction activities at the Karratha site commencing in August 2022.
Woodside Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer Australia Liz Westcott said the safe and timely arrival of all modules was a credit to both the Woodside team and lead contractor Bechtel.
“The scale of what has been delivered is an incredible achievement and reflects the team’s commitment and professionalism.
“The Scarborough Energy Project has made significant progress across multiple work fronts and is now over three quarters complete.
“The Woodside and Bechtel teams will now focus on executing the module integration and commissioning of the facility in preparation for targeted first Scarborough LNG cargo in 2026.”
“The remarkable success of the module program exemplifies the robust relationship between Woodside and Bechtel on the Pluto Train 2 project,” said Bechtel Energy President Paul Marsden
“This achievement reflects our shared vision and the unwavering dedication of our project team to cultivate a One Team culture. We look forward to continuing this collaborative spirit as we successfully deliver this project.”
The Pluto Train 2 Project is part of Woodside’s Scarborough Energy Project, which is set to generate billions of Australian tax dollars and boost the WA economy and communities, growing jobs and bringing work through the supply chain. The project will also support investment in education, training and jobs.
Woodside’s Scarborough Energy Project has awarded more than A$3.6 billion to contracts to Western Australian businesses which includes over 300 businesses since the project began. Together with our contractors, we have invested over A$115 million with Karratha-based businesses. More than 35 contractors have been awarded to Indigenous owned businesses by Bechtel or by Bechtel’s subcontractors to date.
The Scarborough natural gas field is located approximately 375 km off the coast of WA in the Carnarvon Basin. The development includes the installation of a semi-submersible floating production unit, connected by an approximate 430 km pipeline to a second LNG train (Pluto Train 2) at the existing Pluto LNG onshore facility.
