Activ Foundation has moved closer to profitability after lifting its annual results under the watch of its new chief executive Michael Heath.
The charity recently published its annual report for 2023, revealing a $1.8 million loss after recording a $10.8 million loss the year prior.
Activ chief executive Mr Heath said it took some big changes and decisions, namely the transition out of large-scale employment, to record the $9 million turnaround towards profitability.
“At the beginning of 2021 it became clear that Activ was in a dire financial situation,” he said.
“We were faced with some difficult and gut-wrenching decisions that simply had to be made to allow the organisation to continue.
“We were proud to have found a partner in Workpower with the support of the state and federal government to take control of our large-scale employment sites, which ensured customers could continue doing what they love, where they love, albeit under a different name.
“The transition then allowed Activ to focus on what we do best including accommodation, training, community, NDIS planning, behaviour supports, and more.”
Activ is WA’s largest provider of supported disability accommodation, which it says has been a driver in its growth.
“While a $1.8 million deficit is still a deficit, it is reassuring for our customers, their families, and carers to know that the services and supports they so heavily rely on are safe and that Activ has a future, and a bright one at that," Mr Heath said.
“The whole Activ team is excited for everyone to see the growth we have been working so hard towards, with new service offerings, programs that extend to support those around the customers, corporate partnerships, and more opportunities for inclusivity, accessibility, and the greater good.
“Over the coming years, Activ is focused on ensuring that our services sustainably meet the needs of people living with disability of all ages.”
