Lessons learned in trawl through history
Austral Fisheries’ journey is one of adaptation to global forces.
This branch of the entrepreneurial Kailis family continued the fishmongering business started by George Peter Kailis after he arrived in Australia from the Greek island of Kastellorizo. This family, the branch leading from George's son Michael, ended up with a major business called Kailis Bros, which became KB Foods. They sold 90 per cent of this enterprise to Legend Holdings, a division of Chinese giant Lenovo, for an estimated $135 million in 2016. At the time, Matthew Kailis became group CEO while his brothers George and Nicholas remained as executives but there are no longer any Kailis family members of the board of the Australian holding company. Matthew and Nicholas are directors of family holding company Cenvil as is another brother Theodore.
