Prof Mohanty is a founding partner and co-owner of Somnio Global. He is the Paul K Trojan Collegiate Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He has research interests in the areas of Additive Manufacturing, Plasma/ Laser Materials Processing, Biomaterials, Nanostructured Materials and Functionally Designed Materials for Energy Storage and Energy Generation. He has published numerous scientific papers, patents and received many research grants from Federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, US Army, US Navy, and Dept. of Energy. In 2015, Professor Mohanty was awarded an honor for non-resident Indians, the Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) Award for his contribution to science and engineering, presented to him at the Republic Day of India Celebration in New Delhi.
