Matthew Keogh was appointed Shadow Minister for Defence Industry, Shadow Minister for Western Australian Resources, and Shadow Minister Assisting for Small & Family Business under Anthony Albanese's Shadow Cabinet in 2019. In the January 2021 shadow cabinet reshuffle, Mr Keogh retained his role as Shadow Minister for Defence Industry and took on the role of Shadow Minister Assisting for Small Business. Following the ALP's victory at the 2022 federal election, Mr Keogh became the Minister for Veterans Affairs and Defence Personnel under the Albanese government.
He was first elected in the 2016 federal election as the member for the newly created Division of Burt, in the south eastern suburbs of Perth. Mr Keogh joined the Australian Labor Party in 1997 and was president of WA Young Labor in 2007. In 2016, he became deputy chair of the Labor Caucus, spokesperson for the Labor Opposition Waste Watch, and a member of the House Economics Committee.
Mr Keogh holds a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours, majoring in Politics) from Notre Dame University, and was a corporate litigator focusing on corporate regulatory investigations and enforcement work prior to entering politics.
