Madeleine King is a member of the Australian Labor Party, and has been the member for Brand in the Australian House of Representatives since 2016.
Ms King was appointed Shadow Minister for Trade, and was the most senior WA minister, under Anthony Albanese's Shadow Cabinet in 2019. She added the Resources portfolio in the shadow cabinet reshuffle in January 2021. Following the Labor Party's victory at the 2022 federal election, Ms King retained her portfolios and was sworn in as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia under the Albanese government.
After graduating from Safety Bay Senior High School in regional WA, Ms King moved to Perth to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Politics (Australian History) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of WA. Since graduating, Ms King continued to work on promoting the value of higher education and training to the individual and to the wider community.
She was a solicitor before entering politics. As chief operating officer of the Perth USAsia Centre, she helped to bring a unique Western Australian perspective to the international discussion on Australia’s role in the emerging Indo-Pacific region.
