Professor John Newnham AM is the Professor of Obstetrics; Head of the School of Women’s & Infants’ Health; Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the The University of Western Australia. He is also an executive director & research member at Women & Infants Research Foundation. Professor Newnham was awarded an Order of Australia medal in the General Division on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2013 for his contribution to medicine, in particular in the field of obstetrics. He is a finalist in the Professions Award category of the 2019 Western Australian Of The Year Awards, and WA Senior Australian of the Year in the 2020 Western Australian Of The Year Awards. Professor Newnham also took out the Senior Australian of the Year award in 2020 for his work on preventing pre-term birth. After leading the first study on the lifetime impacts of pregnancy, he developed a program that reduced by eight per cent the number of pre-term births in Western Australia. The program was rolled out nationally in 2018.
