Dr Jim Chalmers is an Australian politician who has served in the House of Representatives since 2013, representing the Division of Rankin in Queensland for the Australian Labor Party.
From 1999 to 2001, Dr Chalmers was a research officer in the Department of Premier and Cabinet for Queensland Premier Peter Beattie. He was the ALP's national research manager from 2002 to 2004, media advisor to Shadow Treasurer Wayne Swan from 2005 to 2006, deputy chief of staff to Opposition Leader Kim Beazley in 2006, senior advisor to New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma from 2006 to 2007, and deputy chief of staff & principal advisor (2007–2010) and chief of staff (2010–2013) in the Department of the Treasury. Dr Chalmers became Shadow Treasurer under Anthony Albanese's Shadow Cabinet in 2019. Following the ALP's victory at the 2022 federal election, Dr Chalmers was appointed Treasurer under the Albanese government.
Dr Chalmers holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Communications from Griffith University, and a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University.
