Ian Laurance AM spent 14 years as a Member of the Western Australian Parliament with ministerial portfolios in tourism, housing , lands, environment and regional development. Mr Laurance resigned from parliament in the late 1980's and became executive director of Seaworld Property Trust, Movie World Enterprises and Seaworld Resort Hotel in Gold Coast until it was eventually sold to Warner Brothers.
Mr Laurance was chair of public listed, not-for-profit and charitable organisations.
In 2006, Mr Laurance was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the tourism industry in Western Australia; to the community as a member of the Western Australian Parliament; and to sporting, environmental and charitable organisations. He was also awarded the Sir David Brand Medal for his services to the tourism Industry two years later.
Mr Laurance is a Life Member of Australia's North West Tourism, Tourism Council WA and The 500 Club of Western Australia.
