Dr Guy Debelle joined the Reserve Bank of Australia in 1994. He was the deputy governor and deputy chair since 2016 and, prior to that, was the assistant governor of financial markets for a decade where he played a key role in Australia's response to the global financial crisis of 2008, briefs the board on developments in the financial markets at the monthly board meetings, and participates as the bank's representative in a number of global forum.
In mid-March 2022, Dr Debelle stepped down from the Reserve Bank of Australia following his appointment as chief financial officer of Fortescue Future Industries in June 2022. He then transitioned to a non-executive director role at FFI in November 2022 before departing in September 2023 to join the board of ASX-listed aspiring vanadium miner Tivan.
Dr Debelle has been chair of the Australian Foreign Exchange Committee, the BIS Markets Committee, and the BIS Foreign Exchange Working Group developing the Global Code of Conduct for the Foreign Exchange Market. He had also worked at the International Monetary Fund, Bank for International Settlements, Australian Treasury, and as a visiting Professor in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr Debelle holds an honours degree in Economics from the University of Adelaide, and a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
