Graeme Rowley was a non-executive director of Fortescue Metals Group until November 2014. Mr Rowley joined FMG in 2003, becoming executive director operations in October of that year and later becoming responsible for Fortescue's public policy and corporate affairs in 2009. He retired from his executive role with the company in March 2010. Previously, Mr Rowley was an executive with Rio Tinto, holding senior positions with Hamersley Iron and Argyle Diamonds. Prior to that, he spent some 20 years in the Royal Australian Air Force. Mr Rowley's previous directorships have included the Dampier Port Authority, Pilbara Development Commission, Council for the West Pilbara College of TAFE and the WA state government’s Technical Advisory Council. Mr Rowley is a former chairman of the National Centre for Excellence in Desalination, leaving the role in 2015.
