Douglas Thompson was appointed mining and mineral processing executive of CIMIC Group and managing director of its subsidiary Thiess in August 2017. He is responsible for leading CIMIC Group’s operating companies, Thiess and Sedgman. Mr Thompson returned to Thiess after playing a key role at CPB Contractors as executive general manager of Queensland, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, setting those regions up for a multi-year growth program. He has over 20 years of experience in coal and metalliferous mining operations globally, having previously been Thiess’ executive general manager for Australia & Pacific and held senior positions on major Australian and international mine sites. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mining) with Honours and a National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, and has completed an International Executive Development Program with the University of Cambridge and the University of Witwatersrand.
