Bob Biernat founded Freedom Pools and Spas with his wife Rona. He tried retiring by handing over the Freedom Pools reins to a general manager, a non-family member, but it didn’t work. So in 2012, Mr Biernat returned to Freedom’s Kenwick HQ to pick up a business he set up as a fibreglass tank maker in Narrogin 41 years ago. Mr Biernat’s pool wave had its origin in Britain where the mechanic was in the early 1970s and working with fibreglass for the first time. Soon after his return to Australia, while making fibreglass water tanks in Narrogin, he spotted an ad for a 7.5x3.6m mould in Perth which he promptly bought and used to launch Freedom Pools. Since then, Freedom has made and sold 80,000 fibreglass pools at an annual rate that has ticked up to 1800 a year. It now has factories in Queensland and South Australia.
