
Andrew Smith was born in Melbourne. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with an honours degree in chemical engineering before joining Shell Australia in 1986 as an engineer at the company’s Geelong Refinery. Mr Smith spent the early years of his career in various technical and operational roles across Australia before moving to Fiji in 1999, where he was the general manager of Shell’s Fiji and Pacific Islands business. Following this he moved to London as a global team leader in the Product Trading business and subsequently to Singapore where he was appointed Shell’s Manufacturing director in that region, a role that included management of Shell’s world class Pulau Bukom Refinery. In 2006 Mr Smith was appointed Shell’s vice-president of global products trading – based in the company’s London trading centre. After several years abroad, he returned to Australia with his family in January 2010, when he took up the newly created position of vice president Downstream Australia. This role also saw him join Shell Australia’s country coordination team, which he now chairs. In July 2013, he was appointed Shell’s country chair in Australia and vice-president of the company’s upstream businesses in Australia and New Zealand. Married with two children, Mr Smith holds a post graduate diploma in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management from Monash University and is a keen sailor.
